South Korean finance chief pledges price stability and growth-boosting megaprojects

Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il told parliament that the ministry will prioritize curbing inflation, especially for fuel and food, while advancing large-scale projects in semiconductors and AI.

At a finance, economy, planning and budget committee hearing, Lee Hyoung-il emphasized that stabilising consumer prices is essential for citizens' livelihoods and pledged strict action against market manipulation. He highlighted efforts to keep essential goods such as fuel and food affordable and to lessen the financial strain on disadvantaged groups. The ministry will pursue additional public-housing supply to curb speculation, support job creation, and extend financial services to low-income households.

Lee also reaffirmed backing for the government's three-megaproject strategy aimed at expanding the semiconductor and AI industries. He noted that South Korea will evaluate its U.S. investment commitments based on commercial viability and strategic interest, and will continue to navigate global uncertainties, including Middle-East conflicts and major-country monetary policies. Finally, the finance ministry plans to gradually make the won freely convertible and lower barriers for foreign investors in the securities market.

Why it matters

The policy direction will affect inflation, housing affordability and South Korea's tech competitiveness.
