South Korean investor deposits at brokerages tumble amid market volatility
Investor deposits at South Korean securities firms fell to 88.6 trillion won, the lowest level since mid-January, as the KOSPI remains volatile.
Data from the Korea Financial Investment Association show that total deposits at brokerage houses dropped to 88.6 trillion won, down sharply from 139.6 trillion won in early June. The decline represents a 51-trillion-won fall and marks the smallest balance recorded since mid-January. The slide follows a period of sharp swings in the KOSPI after it peaked above 9,000 points in June. The index ended Friday slightly higher at 5,550.30.
Why it matters
Falling deposits signal reduced investor confidence and could affect liquidity in South Korea's financial markets.
