South Korean Marine chief visits Thailand to boost defence cooperation

Lt. Gen. Ju Il-suk will travel to Bangkok and Sattahip this week for talks with Thai marine leaders and to honor shared Korean War history.

South Korea’s Marine Corps commander, Lt. Gen. Ju Il-suk, is set to spend four days in Thailand, visiting Bangkok and the coastal district of Sattahip, home to the Royal Thai Marine Corps base. He will hold bilateral meetings with Rear Adm. Weerachai Leeka and other high-ranking Thai military officers to explore deeper cooperation and joint defence-industry projects. The itinerary includes a tribute at a Korean War memorial located within the headquarters of Thailand’s 21st Infantry Regiment in Chonburi, recognizing Thai soldiers who served with South Korean forces in the 1950-53 conflict.

The visit underscores the enduring security partnership between the two nations. Officials say the talks aim to expand both operational coordination and commercial defence ties. The trip runs from Tuesday through Friday, concluding after the scheduled engagements.

Why it matters

The visit seeks to strengthen military ties and defence industry links between South Korea and Thailand, enhancing regional security cooperation.
