South Korean police enlist FBI help to track hackers targeting banks

South Korean police have begun cooperating with the U.S. FBI to identify the perpetrators of recent cyberattacks on the country’s financial sector.

The Korean National Police Agency has initiated a joint investigation with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to pinpoint the actors responsible for recent cyber intrusions aimed at South Korea’s financial institutions. The partnership is intended to secure critical investigative material, including account details and access logs from prominent U.S. cybersecurity and artificial intelligence companies. Earlier, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike hinted that a 26-year-old man from Guangdong Province, China, could be linked to the attacks, a claim the individual has refuted.

Police are also examining documentation that suggests connections to a Chinese distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) group. While sources say the authorities are considering alternative suspects, a police official said they could not verify the progress of the cooperation with the FBI.

Why it matters

The probe highlights growing cross-border cyber threats to financial systems and the need for international law-enforcement cooperation.
