South Korean police to upgrade victim notification system by year-end

The Korean National Police Agency announced plans to expand its case-status portal, letting victims see whether suspects have been arrested or questioned.

The Korean National Police Agency said it will enhance its online case notification platform to give victims and complainants clearer information about investigations, such as whether suspects have been detained or questioned. At present, users can only see a vague "under investigation" label on the Criminal Justice Portal, which hampers tracking of case progress. The planned system will display key milestones while expanding the overall range of data available.

The agency intends to seek guidance from the Personal Information Protection Commission to verify that revealing suspect status does not breach privacy regulations. Technical work for the upgrade will run concurrently with policy reviews, aiming for a rollout by the end of the year. In a related move, the KNPA is weighing a change to its English name, replacing "Agency" with "Service" to underscore its shift toward a citizen-centered approach to public safety.

Why it matters

Improved notifications give crime victims clearer insight into investigations and strengthen trust in law-enforcement transparency.
