South Korean President Lee pledges to help restart US-North Korea talks
President Lee Jae Myung told the UN General Assembly that Seoul will work to quickly revive dialogue between the United States and North Korea.
At the United Nations General Assembly in New York, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung reaffirmed his vision of South Korea as a mediator for peace on the Korean Peninsula. He pledged that Seoul will take concrete steps to facilitate the swift resumption of talks between the United States and North Korea. Lee highlighted President Donald Trump's recent expressions of interest in dialogue with Kim Jong-un as a hard-won opening for progress.
He emphasized that the two Koreas are still technically at war, having ended the 1950-53 conflict only with an armistice. Lee’s remarks came as inter-Korean relations remain at a standstill, underscoring Seoul’s willingness to bridge the diplomatic gap.
Why it matters
The pledge could shape future US-North Korea negotiations and affect regional stability.
