South Korean researchers pilot wave-powered hydrogen production off Jeju Island

A concrete platform off Jeju’s west coast is being used to test converting wave-generated electricity into hydrogen for long-term energy storage.

The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering operates a 32-by-23-meter test platform anchored in 15-meter-deep water near Jeju Island. After a brief sail through rolling seas, a boat reaches the structure where wave energy is harvested and transformed into electricity. Researchers are evaluating whether this power can be efficiently turned into hydrogen, offering a method to store renewable energy without immediate transmission to the grid.
