South Korean Supreme Court upholds three-year sentence for ex-Marine commander

The Supreme Court confirmed a three-year jail term for former Marine Corps 1st Division commander Lim Seong-geun for negligent actions that led to a Marine’s death during a 2023 flood rescue.

In a ruling issued on Tuesday, South Korea’s Supreme Court upheld a three-year imprisonment for Lim Seong-geun, the former commander of the Marine Corps 1st Division. Lim was convicted of causing death or injury through occupational negligence and of violating military orders, charges stemming from a July 2023 operation in Yecheon that sought victims of heavy rain. Prosecutors argued that Lim sent the Marines into the search without providing life vests and disregarded a directive to transfer command to the Army.

The operation resulted in the death of Corporal Chae Su-geun and injuries to other service members. The court found no legal error in the lower-court’s interpretation of the Military Criminal Act. Lim had been indicted in November 2025 by a team led by special counsel Lee Myeong-hyeon.

Why it matters

The ruling underscores legal accountability for senior military officers in South Korea.
