Southern Water hit with £2.4 million fine for multiple sewage and diesel spills in Kent
A court in Bromley imposed a £2.4 million penalty on Southern Water for five pollution incidents in Kent between 2019 and 2021.
The fines relate to illegal releases of raw sewage and a diesel leak that contaminated Swalecliffe Brook, Faversham Creek and Whitstable Harbour, killing roughly 70 fish. Canterbury City Council issued health warnings that discouraged swimming at nearby beaches during peak holiday periods. The penalty follows an earlier £7 million sanction for illegal sewage dumping at Broadstairs and Margate. Southern Water blamed extreme rainfall for the spills and said it has invested over £35 million in network upgrades since then.
