Southwest Airlines to debut its first airport lounges in four U.S. cities

Southwest Airlines announced plans to open its inaugural airport lounges, with four locations slated to open in late 2027.

Southwest Airlines disclosed a strategy to introduce airport lounges for the first time, collaborating with JPMorgan Chase to create a premium offering for higher-spending travelers. Four lounges are planned for Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu and Nashville, with construction progressing and openings targeted for late 2027. The airline will also roll out a Chase-issued co-branded credit card in 2027 that will grant cardholders access to the lounge network.

This initiative is part of Southwest’s effort to shed its low-cost image, boost ancillary revenue, and compete with legacy carriers amid rising fuel costs and pressure from activist investor Elliott Investment Management. CEO Bob Jordan has previously hinted at expanding cabin options and possibly long-haul international service, though those ideas remain under consideration. The lounges are intended to lock in premium customers, support higher fares and increase spending on co-branded cards.

Why it matters

The move signals Southwest’s shift toward premium services to improve margins and compete with legacy airlines.
