Southwest monsoon to keep raining over Luzon and Visayas, raising flood risk
The habagat will continue to bring rain to Luzon and the Visayas in the second week of September, prompting flood and landslide warnings.
PAGASA announced on Monday that the southwest monsoon, or habagat, will remain active over Luzon and the Visayas during the second week of September, heightening the danger of floods and landslides. Heavy to intense rainfall of 100-200 mm is expected in Zambales within 24 hours, while several provinces will see 50-100 mm over the next two days, and nearly 30 areas—including Metro Manila—are projected to receive significant rain by mid-week.
Additional scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely across other parts of Luzon and western Visayas. Although no low-pressure systems are currently monitored, PAGASA cautioned that two could form later in the week, one east of the Philippines and another westward that may evolve into a tropical cyclone. The agency forecasts two or three tropical cyclones to develop or enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility in September, with the next names being Queenie, Rosal and Samuel. Authorities advise the public to remain vigilant for flood and landslide hazards.
