Soviet Luna-2 Becomes First Human-Made Object to Hit the Moon
The Soviet Luna-2 probe successfully impacted the Moon’s surface, marking the first time a human-built object reached another celestial body.
In the late 1950s, the United States and the Soviet Union raced to demonstrate superiority in space, and the Luna-2 mission became a milestone for the Soviet program. The spacecraft, weighing around 390 kilograms and equipped with particle detectors, magnetometers and micrometeoroid sensors, was launched on a Voskhod-L rocket from Baikonur. After a 38-hour journey, Luna-2 impacted the Moon’s surface near Palus Putredinis at roughly 12,000 km/h, with the launch vehicle’s final stage also crashing into the Moon.
The mission proved that a human-made object could be directed to a specific point on another world and returned scientific measurements, confirming the absence of a strong lunar magnetic field and Van Allen-like radiation belts. Luna-2’s success paved the way for subsequent Luna missions, including soft landings and sample returns that continued until the program’s final flight in 1976.
