Space Cargo signs on as first customer for SpaceX's Starfall re-entry capsule
SpaceX announced that Luxembourg-based Space Cargo will be the inaugural client for its Starfall capsule, targeting a 2028 orbital return mission.
SpaceX's emerging Starfall program, a disk-shaped re-entry capsule launched on Falcon 9 and later on Starship, has secured its first paying customer: European integrator Space Cargo. The Luxembourg company will place its "BentoBox" container inside Starfall, allowing up to one ton of diverse payloads to survive re-entry and be recovered for commercial use. CEO Nicolas Gaume highlighted that the 2028 mission, which will also be Starship's first commercial flight, will enable rapid, high-volume returns, especially for life-science and biotechnology clients.
Starfall leverages SpaceX's heat-shield technology originally developed for the Dragon capsule. The deal places Space Cargo alongside other capsule providers such as Varda Space and ATMOS Space Cargo, while the Pentagon watches re-entry capabilities for defense research. Gaume declined to disclose pricing, but emphasized the importance of flight frequency once Starship exits development.
Why it matters
It marks the first commercial use of SpaceX's new payload-return capsule, opening a market for space-based manufacturing and research.
