SpaceX's $100 Billion Louisiana Launch Site May Fund Marsh Restoration, Details Unclear

SpaceX's planned Starbase Louisiana launch complex could support coastal marsh restoration, but the exact funding amount and acreage remain undefined, CPRA director says.

SpaceX intends to create a $100 billion rocket launch complex, called Starbase Louisiana, on roughly 125,000 acres of former ExxonMobil land in Vermilion Parish, about 45 miles south of Lafayette. Early talks with the state Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority show the company is willing to fund parts of the Coastal Master Plan, such as a project to restore about 2,000 acres of marsh lost to canals and subsidence.

No definitive financial commitment or restoration target has been set; contributions could arise from required wetland mitigation, voluntary shoreline protection, and a portion of the $100 million land purchase price. CPRA expects only 1,000-1,500 acres of the site to be built up, leaving much of the area as wetlands, and sees SpaceX’s involvement as a possible catalyst for coastal protection the agency could not otherwise afford.

Environmental organizations, including the National Wildlife Federation, have filed comments opposing federal regulatory waivers that would speed the project, warning of risks to habitats and endangered species such as whooping cranes. SpaceX’s Texas launch site is cited as a potential model, though it has faced criticism for wildlife disturbances. Construction is slated to begin in 2027 with initial launches anticipated by 2029.
