SpaceX's Nasdaq 100 weight set to more than double after index rebalance

SpaceX will see its share of the Nasdaq 100 rise from about 1.28% to roughly 2.82% following the upcoming index rebalance, prompting likely inflows from passive funds.

According to Nasdaq’s Global Index Watch, SpaceX’s proportion in the Nasdaq 100 is projected to climb to approximately 2.82%, more than double its current 1.28% share. This adjustment is likely to generate billions of new purchases by passive vehicles that track the index, including the $481 billion Invesco QQQ Trust Series 1. SpaceX’s modest initial weighting stemmed from its July addition to the index while most of its shares remained locked and unavailable for trading.

As lockup periods expire, the free-float rises, allowing a higher index weight. The first lockup release in August coincided with SpaceX’s debut earnings report, but the market absorbed the new shares without a price decline, and insiders kept their stakes. The definitive weighting will be set later this month after the rebalance is finalized.

Why it matters

A higher Nasdaq 100 weight could drive massive passive-fund buying, impacting SpaceX’s stock liquidity and market valuation.
