SpaceX’s proposed AI satellite fleet could generate unprecedented orbital e-waste

A plan to launch up to one million AI-focused satellites would create a new class of space-borne electronic waste, with many units destined for deorbit or distant disposal orbits.

Elon Musk’s vision of a million-satellite AI data-center network would dramatically increase the amount of electronic material placed in space. With GPU components typically lasting five years, roughly 200,000 of the proposed AI1 satellites would need to be retired each year. FCC documents indicate that about 40,000 would be deliberately deorbited to burn up, scattering metals and aluminum throughout the atmosphere and possibly affecting ozone levels over decades.

The remaining 160,000 units could be shifted to a distant disposal orbit, where they would remain out of Earth’s recycling loop. While the exact mass of hardware is unclear without detailed specs, even focusing solely on GPUs highlights a substantial new source of orbital e-waste. The scheme contrasts with current discussions about asteroid mining, prompting questions about the environmental cost of sending valuable components away from Earth.
