Spain braces for widespread strikes and protests affecting travel this autumn

A general strike on 11 November and several sectoral walkouts are set to disrupt transport and public events across Spain as the election campaign begins.

Spain is preparing for a series of labour actions this autumn, highlighted by a general strike scheduled for 11 November, marking the first such nationwide walkout since 2012 and coinciding with the launch of the election campaign. Public transport, airport operations and train services could face interruptions, but the exact extent depends on the minimum service provisions that have yet to be confirmed. The Semaf union has called a 24-hour strike for train crews on 29 October, likely causing delays and cancellations across the Renfe network, while teachers in Madrid continue an indefinite strike that has already led to a blockade of the A-3 motorway near Moratalaz.

Protesters are expected to set up temporary camps in central squares such as Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, adding to traffic congestion. Meanwhile, Spanish meteorologists warn that autumn weather may produce sudden, heavy downpours reminiscent of the floods that hit Valencia in 2024, potentially prompting travel cancellations. The CGT union has cancelled its airport ground-staff strike at Barcelona-El Prat, easing some concerns for air travellers.
