Spain launches first full-scale drill for a possible Teide eruption on Tenerife

Spain is conducting its first comprehensive emergency exercise for a possible eruption of the Teide volcano on Tenerife, under the title EU-Modex Tenerife 2026. The operation began in Garachico and includes participants from the public, various rescue services and security agencies. Organisers emphasize communication, referencing the 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption on neighboring La Palma as a learning point.

The drill will assess the national warning system that delivers rapid alerts to mobile devices, with test messages planned for certain locals and simulated evacuation procedures considered. A follow-up large-scale drill is scheduled in Guía de Isora within the next month. Authorities have been monitoring Teide’s activity since 2016, noting increased seismic signals and a newly identified magma accumulation beneath the volcano.
