Spain moves to scrap early-retirement pension cuts for 40-year contributors

The Spanish Congress voted to start drafting a law that would eliminate pension reductions for workers who have contributed to Social Security for at least 40 years.

Spain's lower house approved, by 178 votes to 33 with 136 abstentions, the first step toward a bill that would erase the pension cut for anyone retiring early after 40 years of Social Security contributions. The initiative applies to both voluntary early retirement and situations where workers are compelled to leave their jobs before reaching the normal retirement age. The proposal is not yet law; it must still pass through the full parliamentary procedure and may be altered.

If enacted, the INSS would be required to recompute pensions for those already receiving reduced benefits, applying any increase from the date of the request. The change could affect many long-term contributors, including foreign residents, as Spain prepares for a further rise in the standard retirement age to 67 in 2027.

Why it matters

It could significantly boost retirement income for millions of long-time contributors in Spain.

Frames the bill as a beneficial step that restores full pensions for long-term contributors by scrapping earlier cuts.

CENTER

The left emphasises

  • approval by 178 votes to 33 with 136 abstentions
  • the bill would erase pension cuts for early retirees after 40 years of contributions
