Spain names Nations League squad, drops Gavi and Joan Garcia, adds four newcomers

Luis de la Fuente revealed Spain's Nations League roster, leaving out Barcelona duo Gavi and Joan Garcia and bringing in four new players.

Luis de la Fuente named a 23-man Spain squad for the opening Nations League match against England, omitting Barcelona midfielder Gavi and goalkeeper Joan Garcia. Garcia suffered a knee injury on Wednesday night, with no return date provided, while Gavi faces a one-game ban for unsporting conduct in the World Cup final. The roster introduces four newcomers: Espanyol striker Roberto Fernandez, Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez, Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen, who missed the World Cup victory in the United States, and defender Fermin Lopez, previously sidelined by injury.

Celta Vigo forward Borja Iglesias also misses out, and veteran Marcos Llorente has retired. Spain's schedule continues with fixtures against Croatia, the Czech Republic and a second clash with Croatia during the upcoming international break.

Why it matters

The selections shape Spain's line-up for the Nations League and signal changes after their World Cup triumph.
