Spain prepares its biggest general strike in years over housing and wages

A coalition of Spanish unions has scheduled a 24-hour general strike to protest the housing crisis and stagnant wages.

Spain is set to see its first large-scale general strike in 14 years, organized by the tenant union Sindicato de Inquilinas and supported by a broad alliance of unions, including the national federations CCOO and UGT and regional bodies such as Galicia's CIG and the Basque ELA and LAB. The 24-hour walkout is intended to highlight the country's severe housing shortage and low wage levels that prevent many from affording decent homes.

The strike plan was confirmed after a meeting that brought together all participating unions, both in person and remotely. The news emerged alongside the death of Maricarmen Abascal, an elderly woman evicted by the firm Urbagestión, who passed away at Hospital Gregorio Marañón. Employers’ group CEOE has cautioned that the strike may be illegal, labeling it a political protest, though precedents exist for mixed-purpose strikes. Organisers stress the aim is a nationwide, inclusive action that links housing demands with broader labour concerns.

Why it matters

The strike underscores mounting public frustration with Spain's unaffordable housing and stagnant wages.
