Spain records historic surge in employed migrants after extraordinary regularisation
Spain’s latest employment data show a record increase in workers, driven largely by the regularisation of migrant labour, while unemployment also rose modestly.
September saw Spain’s labour market hit an all-time high in the number of workers registered with the Seguridad Social, thanks to an extraordinary regularisation of migrant workers. The influx of newly regularised migrants lifted the total count of foreign affiliates to a historic peak, while overall employment surpassed previous records. The rate of job creation accelerated to its strongest level in more than a decade, according to ministry officials.
At the same time, the official unemployment count increased by several thousand, a change the ministries explain as a normal transition as migrants enter the formal labour market. Elma Saiz and Yolanda Díaz both praised the boost to employment and noted the accompanying rise in unemployment as a temporary effect of the regularisation. The data also show a gender split in unemployment, with women representing a larger share of the jobless pool.
Why it matters
The surge shows how migrant regularisation can quickly expand the formal workforce and affect unemployment statistics.
