Spain's Health Ministry to Offer Medical Abortion in Primary Care Centers
The Ministry of Health announced plans to integrate pharmacological abortion into primary-care services, revising regulations and drug authorisation.
At an event marking International Safe Abortion Day, Health Minister Mónica García outlined a programme to make medical abortion available through primary-care centres. The plan involves modifying the royal decree that sets the requirements for health-centre authorisation, as well as revising the technical sheet for mifepristone so it can be dispensed beyond hospital settings. The Common Services Portfolio of the National Health System will be updated to list the procedure explicitly for primary care.
García stressed collaboration with autonomous communities and health professionals to guarantee women know where to go, receive accurate information and continuous accompaniment. She framed the reforms as a way to save travel, alleviate suffering and remove barriers, while insisting that conscientious-objector arrangements must not impede access. The ministry pledged to defend the right to abortion vigorously and hold regional governments accountable for compliance.
