Spain's top judge condemns personal attacks on magistrates as pressure tactic

Isabel Perelló, president of both the Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary, used the judicial year opening to condemn the personal disqualification of judges, describing it as a pressure instrument against the courts. She explained that attacks on judges extend beyond the individual case and erode public trust in the justice system, particularly when they originate from officials holding institutional roles.

Her remarks came after a clash between the government and some judges over a Supreme Court ruling that halted voting rights for descendants of those repressed under Franco. The government, represented by Pedro Sánchez, expressed disagreement with the ruling, while other officials have criticized specific judges involved in high-profile cases. Perelló also called for restraint in judges' public statements, emphasizing the need for measured discourse while upholding judicial independence.
