Spanish authorities seize 862 kg of cocaine hidden in Valencia sugar shipment
Police and Guardia Civil officers uncovered 862 kg of cocaine concealed in a sugar container from Ecuador at Valencia port, suspecting the drugs were loaded onto the vessel while at sea.
Customs officials and Guardia Civil officers conducting a standard risk check at Valencia port opened a container that was supposed to hold sugar from Ecuador on September 27. Inside, they found 862 bricks of cocaine, each weighing about one kilogram, arranged in 32 bundles and placed on top of the sugar cargo. The bundles were wrapped in nets and ropes, leading investigators to believe the drugs were not loaded at the origin but were hoisted onto the vessel from a smaller boat while it was already at sea.
Authorities suspect the operation may have involved a crew member who could discreetly transfer the narcotics into the container. The seizure represents one of the largest drug busts in recent Spanish maritime history. The investigation remains active, and the case will be handed over to the judicial system for prosecution.
