Spanish doctors vote for indefinite public-health strike amid labor dispute

All doctors employed by Spain’s public health network, from senior staff to MIR residents and workers in partnered private centres, will commence an indefinite strike at midnight, according to a unanimous decision by the CESM strike committee. The move comes after the Ministry of Health, under Mónica García, terminated negotiations in June and advanced a legislative proposal that sets future working conditions without union input.

Medical unions such as CESM, SMA and SME label the ministry’s stance as intolerable and have called on the government to resume sincere talks. They also urge parliamentary groups to reject one outlet draft in its present form and demand a revised proposal drafted through direct dialogue with medical professionals. Until a new negotiation framework is established, the strike is expected to halt routine care across the country.
