A new Spanish film, La superviviente, reveals how Barcelona native Alicia Esteve Head fabricated the Tania Head persona and deceived the 9/11 survivor community.
La superviviente, opening in Spanish cinemas on August 28 and later streaming on Filmin, reconstructs the deception of Alicia Esteve Head, a Barcelona woman who pretended to be 9/11 survivor Tania Head and claimed to have escaped the South Tower and lost her fiancé. The project, led by filmmaker Kike Maíllo and writer Markos Goikolea, employs actress Hannah Becker to embody Alicia while documenting the preparation process, creating a “hall of mirrors” between the real fraud and its dramatization.
The film details how Head built her story on an internet forum, used therapy groups as rehearsal spaces, and rose to lead the World Trade Center Survivors’ Network, all without seeking financial aid. It also juxtaposes her case with that of Spanish trade unionist Enric Marco Batlle, whose false Holocaust survival claims inspired Javier Cercas’s book El impostor. The creators argue that the lie thrived on a societal craving for resilient post-9/11 narratives, offering emotional rewards rather than monetary gain.
