Spanish forces and police reinforce Ceuta border amid fresh migrant surge threat
The army and riot police deployed to the Benzú crossing in Ceuta after intelligence warned of a large group of sub-Saharan migrants attempting to breach the fence.
Early on the day, Spanish military personnel and National Police riot units were positioned at the Benzú crossing north of Ceuta after alerts of a possible mass attempt by sub-Saharan migrants to cross from Morocco. Sources on the ground said the deployment was preventive, responding to movements of hundreds of migrants in the nearby Moroccan hills. Moroccan gendarmerie cooperation prevented any successful breach, despite some migrants trying to scale the fence.
Four military vehicles with roughly 25 soldiers stay deployed, and four police vans were dispatched but returned after confirming order. The Interior Ministry plans to reinforce Ceuta and Melilla with more riot police in the coming days, maintaining heightened alert through at least the next weeks.
Why it matters
The deployment highlights rising migration pressures on Spain's enclaves and the need for heightened security coordination with Morocco.
