Spanish Hornet pilot intercepts rare Russian electronic reconnaissance aircraft over Baltic Sea
A Spanish EF-18 Hornet from Ämari base was dispatched to identify a Russian Il-20M electronic-reconnaissance plane spotted in the Baltic Sea region.
When radar picked up an unknown Russian plane over the Baltic Sea, the Spanish Air Force launched a pair of EF-18 Hornets from Estonia’s Ämari base. The target was an Il-20M, a Soviet-derived airframe retrofitted with numerous antennas and sensors for monitoring radio, radar and other electronic emissions, and NATO refers to it as “Coot-A.” Because the aircraft did not respond to air-traffic control, NATO’s ready-alert fighters were tasked with visual identification and escort.
The operation was notable for the Spanish pilot, for whom this was the inaugural identification mission, and it highlighted the ongoing electronic-reconnaissance activity in a contested region. The Il-20M periodically appears in NATO-Russian encounters around the Baltic, underscoring the persistent aerial surveillance and monitoring efforts by both sides.
Why it matters
The encounter shows continued NATO-Russia aerial surveillance tensions in a strategically sensitive region.
