Spanish monarchs to make first state visit to Finland amid rising security concerns

Spain announced that King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will undertake their first state visit to Finland between 5 and 7 October, traveling with Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares. The delegation will spend time in Helsinki and in the Lapland city of Rovaniemi, where they will tour the Lapland Air Base and the Jaeger Brigade base, underscoring Finland’s strategic position after joining NATO. Their program also addresses broader security challenges, including hybrid threats studied at a Helsinki centre, and features a meeting with local officials and members of the Sami indigenous population at the Arktikum museum.

In Helsinki, they will be received by President Alexander Stubb and Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, and will attend a state dinner and a floral tribute at Hietaniemi Cemetery. Queen Letizia will visit a bilingual Spanish-English school and open an exhibition on architect Alvar Aalto, while business leaders discuss cooperation in AI, quantum technologies, photonics and semiconductors.
