Spanish Navy Special Forces Conduct Joint Maritime Exercise in Galicia

The Fuerza de Guerra Naval Especial is carrying out the GNEX 26-02 exercise in Galicia to test coordination of naval, air and unmanned assets.

From a command post at La Graña Naval Base in Ferrol, the FGNE is executing the GNEX 26-02 exercise across the Galician rías, integrating naval, aerial and unmanned systems in realistic scenarios. The drill tests deployment speed, command-and-control procedures and joint coordination among participating Spanish units such as the Flotilla de Aeronaves, the Fuerza de Protección, the combat supply ship Cantabria (A-15), the patrol boat Serviola (P-71) and the Escuela Naval Militar.

Allied contributions come from Poland's Formoza maritime special-operations unit and observers from the U.S. Navy's TF-66, fostering mutual understanding and operational compatibility. The Ministry of Defence says the exercise is part of the FGNE's regular preparation cycle to maintain peak readiness for maritime special-operations missions. By simulating restricted-access and multi-domain threat environments, the training seeks to sharpen tactical response and improve joint capability across the participating forces.

Why it matters

The drill strengthens Spain's naval special-operations readiness and promotes cooperation with NATO partners.
