Spanish prosecutor plans to appeal Basque government's renewed semi-freedom for ETA inmate

The National Court's prosecutor, Carlos García Berro, announced he will appeal the Basque government's decision to grant semi-freedom to ETA prisoner Soledad Iparragirre, known as Anboto, under article 100.2 of the Prison Regulations. The regional government had previously granted the same relief in January, which was reversed by Judge José Luis Castro in April, returning Iparragirre to custody. Five months later, the Basque justice department re-issued the semi-freedom without a fresh legal review.

García Berro, citing the short interval since the prior ruling, maintains his opposition and has asked the prison surveillance court to reinstate imprisonment. Judge Castro had earlier criticized the regional government's practice of using article 100.2 to release ETA inmates without prior analysis, noting the distress it causes victims and prisoners alike. The prosecutor's new appeal seeks to prevent Iparragirre from leaving prison again under the same provisions.
