Spanish soldier killed while battling Aragon wildfire as massive firefighting effort expands

On Aug 16, a Spanish soldier lost his life while helping to extinguish the Penas de Riglos wildfire in the Aragon region, according to regional president Jorge Azcon, who offered condolences to the Military Emergencies Unit and the soldier’s relatives. The blaze, which ignited on Aug 10, has burned 16,600 hectares, driven by extreme heat and unpredictable winds, and forced the evacuation of over 1,000 residents. Authorities have mobilised the largest firefighting deployment ever seen in Aragon, featuring French reinforcements, up to 40 aircraft, and a total of about 1,000 personnel from the army and other Spanish units.

The flames have approached the historic San Juan de la Pena monasteries, landmarks dating back to the 10th century. In a related development, Andalusia’s long-running wildfire, affecting more than 25,000 hectares across Huelva and Sevilla provinces, was declared under control on the same day, allowing many evacuees to return home. The incidents underscore the growing threat of heat-driven wildfires across Spain and the broader European region.
