Spanish sports council seeks sanction for La Liga chief's Nazi analogy
The Spanish Sports Council has asked the national sports court to evaluate whether La Liga president Javier Tebas should be penalised for likening Real Madrid's TV channel tactics to Nazi propaganda.
The Spanish Sports Council (CSD) announced Thursday that it has petitioned the Spanish Sports Court (TAD) to consider disciplinary action against La Liga president Javier Tebas for his recent comments about Real Madrid's television channel. Under Spanish sports legislation, officials can be sanctioned for public acts that harm the sport's dignity, a principle the CSD cited as essential for preserving respect and fair play.
In mid-October, Tebas likened the club's broadcasting approach to the propaganda methods employed by Nazi Germany's Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, clarifying that he was referring only to the techniques, not the ideology or the fans. Real Madrid reacted angrily, demanding Tebas step down. Tebas later reiterated his stance on X, arguing that the club's rhetoric should also be scrutinised and questioning whether the values he defends apply only when officials are attacked.
He also noted his dual role as La Liga chief and vice-president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The council's request now awaits a ruling from the sports tribunal.
Why it matters
The case could set a precedent for how sports officials are held accountable for inflammatory remarks.
