Spanish Typhoon pilot highlights intense training at Exercise Pitch Black in Darwin

At Exercise Pitch Black, the largest international aviation war game held in Darwin, Spanish Air and Space Force Captain Jaime Molina Cegarra flew the Eurofighter Typhoon, the fastest aircraft in the drill, capable of exceeding 2,400 km/h and climbing to 55,000 feet. He emphasized that Darwin’s expansive, lightly used airspace offers a perfect environment for pilots to practice extreme maneuvers without the congestion found in European skies.

Over three weeks, dozens of high-performance jets have dominated the skies of northern Australia, with the Typhoon able to sustain up to nine G-forces, testing the limits of human endurance. Cegarra, who spent three years studying at St Edmunds College in Canberra, said the experience reminds him of his connection to Australia. Back in Spain, he performs aerobatic displays with his unit’s demonstration team and hopes future Australian air shows will feature more daring stunts.
