Spanish Vineyard’s 20-Year No-Tillage Strategy Doubles Soil Organic Matter
A rain-fed vineyard near Mota del Cuervo in central Spain has kept spontaneous vegetation between vines for over two decades, resulting in topsoil organic matter more than twice that of an adjacent tilled plot.
A study conducted near Mota del Cuervo in Cuenca province examined two adjacent vineyards: one managed for more than 20 years with spontaneous cover crops and no irrigation or pesticides, and the other using regular tillage. Soil analysis revealed that the cover-cropped plot’s top layer held an average of 1.74% organic matter, just over double the 0.83% measured in the tilled plot. Additional measurements showed the cover-cropped soil had about 51.2% porosity compared with 44.0% in the conventional soil, and it exhibited elevated enzyme activities, suggesting richer microbial life.
These findings suggest that maintaining vegetation and limiting disturbance can gradually improve soil structure, nutrient cycling, and water retention in dry Mediterranean vineyards. While the approach may not suit every vineyard due to potential water competition, the results provide a real-world example of how long-term ground cover can bolster soil resilience under drought stress.
