Sparta Sarpsborg ice hockey club files for bankruptcy after failed rescue efforts

Sparta Ishockey Elite's governing board has decided to seek compulsory liquidation, stating that the club's financial condition cannot support continued operations. Intensive assessments and a recent crisis meeting in the city did not yield a sustainable funding plan. In a press release, the board conveyed profound disappointment and gratitude toward employees, athletes, partners, volunteers and fans who have supported the club over many years.

The bankruptcy petition will be submitted to the district court. The announcement comes just before the start of the upcoming Eliteserien season. Sparta, a historic Østfold club, previously won national championships in 1984, 1989 and 2011.
