SPD Bundestag members oppose Berlin coalition talks with Left Party and Greens

Members of the SPD Bundestag faction released a statement rejecting the state leadership's plan to begin coalition talks with the Berlin Left Party and the Greens.

The SPD Bundestag caucus said it respects the Berlin SPD's decision-making authority but argues that current conditions make a coalition with the Berlin Left and the Greens untenable. It warned that such a partnership would undermine core social-democratic values and called the Berlin Left "incapable of governing," especially over proposals to nationalise housing. State chairman Steffen Krach warned the dispute could become a breaking point for the party.

Why it matters

The internal split could affect future coalition formations and the SPD's policy direction in Berlin.
