Speaker Johnson backs Ohio Rep. Max Miller’s campaign amid abuse claims

When asked about Rep. Max Miller’s re-election, House Speaker Mike Johnson responded affirmatively, calling the Ohio lawmaker a “great member of Congress” despite ongoing abuse allegations. Johnson added that Miller is confronting personal challenges and that the House Ethics Committee is handling the investigation, emphasizing the need for due process. Miller’s ex-wife, Emily Moreno, alleges domestic violence and child abuse, citing incidents such as hot-water attacks, a gun being pointed at her, and a fractured collarbone for their two-year-old daughter.

Miller has rejected the accusations, labeling them politically motivated, and has filed paperwork to trigger an ethics review of himself. The Ethics Committee announced its inquiry on Aug. 4, but a 60-day blackout period beginning Sept. 4 means the investigation’s results will likely emerge after the November elections. Miller previously told one outlet that Johnson and other GOP leaders were standing behind him and that no one had urged him to withdraw from the ballot.
