Speaker Johnson flags 21 pivotal House races shaping midterm majority
Speaker Mike Johnson highlighted 21 competitive congressional districts that he believes will determine the House balance after the November midterms.
At a press briefing, Speaker Mike Johnson said the outcome of roughly 21 congressional contests will decide which party controls the House after the midterms. Referring to the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, he listed seven Republican-held seats that require defensive campaigns: Gabe Evans (CO), Tom Barrett (MI), Mike Lawler (NY), Derrick Van Orden (WI), Juan Ciscomani (AZ), Jen Kiggans (VA) and David Valadao (CA). Johnson also identified two Democratic districts—Jared Moskowitz (FL) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA)—as vulnerable to GOP gains.
He added that races in New York’s Long Island, Nevada’s Las Vegas area and other districts such as Tom Suozzi, Laura Gillen, Susie Lee and Dina Titus could be closely contested. While midterms traditionally favor the party out of the White House, Johnson argued that recent redistricting gives Republicans a chance to limit expected losses.
