Speaker says he has not received draft bills on PM term limits and AG-PP split
The parliamentary speaker reported he has yet to get the proposed legislation limiting the prime minister’s tenure or separating the attorney-general from the public prosecutor.
In Bangi, the speaker disclosed that he has not received the papers for two pending reform measures: one to cap the prime minister’s service at ten years and another to split the roles of attorney-general and public prosecutor. He noted that standard practice involves a two-week notice before bills are introduced, a protocol that has not been followed this time. Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said confirmed the term-limit bill is prepared for its second reading, but its tabling rests with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as leader of the House.
The term-limit proposal originally failed to achieve the two-thirds majority required in March. The AG-PP separation bill, first presented on February 23, had its second reading delayed on July 14 to let the government present amendments to the Conference of Rulers. The parliamentary calendar shows the next session will run from October 5 to December 8, with the 2027 budget slated for October 9.
