Special counsel files arrest warrant request to extend detention of ex-first lady Kim Keon Hee
A special counsel led by Min Joong-ki has asked the Supreme Court for a new arrest warrant to keep former first lady Kim Keon Hee in custody as her detention expires at the end of the month.
A special counsel unit headed by Min Joong-ki filed an application with the Supreme Court seeking a fresh arrest warrant for former first lady Kim Keon Hee, whose current detention is due to lapse on Oct. 31. Kim, who has been incarcerated since August of the previous year, is awaiting appellate courts’ rulings on two separate convictions—a four-year sentence for corruption and a five-year term for bribery and related offenses.
The counsel argues that her continued custody is necessary while the higher court reviews the cases. The Supreme Court has scheduled a deliberation session for next Thursday, but a definitive ruling on the first case is unlikely before the detention deadline. If granted, the new warrant would extend her imprisonment pending final judgments. The move underscores the ongoing legal battles surrounding the former president’s family.
Why it matters
Extending Kim Keon Hee's detention could influence South Korea's political climate and the outcome of high-profile corruption cases.
