Special counsel raids South Korea's election commission over alleged bid rigging
A special counsel team led by Lee Tae-han searched the National Election Commission and related firms for evidence of possible collusion in a 5 billion-won procurement scheme.
Investigators from the special counsel unit entered the NEC headquarters in Seoul and four additional sites, including companies that supply election materials. They are probing claims that the commission and the vendors conspired to rig bids for polling-station supplies used in last year’s presidential race and the June local elections. The probe follows earlier inquiries into ballot shortages reported during the June 3 local elections.
Why it matters
The raid could expose corruption in South Korea’s election administration, affecting public trust in the voting process.
