Special Counsel to Inspect Ballots and Counting Equipment from June 3 Election

A special counsel team will examine the ballots stored at Seoul's SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium and the equipment used on June 3, aiming to confirm whether any ballot tampering or machine errors occurred.

A special counsel panel, headed by prosecutor Lee Tae-han, is set to conduct a public examination of the ballots housed in Seoul's SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium, the venue used for counting votes in the June 3 local elections. The team will also scrutinize the voting and tallying equipment, related paperwork, and camera recordings from the storage facilities to detect any possible intrusions or malfunctions. The investigation does not involve a recount of the votes but forms part of a broader probe into claims of inadequate management by the National Election Commission.

Around 100 legislators selected by the National Assembly, representing both major parties, along with at least 50 media representatives, plan to attend the inspection. Officials indicated that the inspections aim to verify whether any ballot fabrications or technical errors influenced the election outcome.

Why it matters

The inspection seeks to ensure the integrity of recent local elections and address public concerns about possible ballot mishandling.
