Special Counsel Urges Appeals Court to Keep Yoon Suk Yeol's Election Law Conviction
A special counsel team asked the Seoul High Court to reject former President Yoon Suk Yeol's appeal and uphold his suspended sentence for false campaign statements.
At a hearing before the Seoul High Court, a special counsel team headed by Min Joong-ki requested that the court uphold former President Yoon Suk Yeol's suspended prison term for violating election law. The prosecutors contended that Yoon's false denials about meeting shaman Jeon Seong-bae and about introducing a lawyer to former tax official Yoon Woo-jin were intended to preserve his status as a leading candidate and likely swayed voters.
A lower court had previously sentenced Yoon to one year and six months, suspended for three years, after convicting him under the Public Official Election Act. The appeal seeks to overturn that decision, but the special counsel argued the conviction should stand. If the appellate court affirms the ruling, Yoon's election would be invalidated and his party would face financial repercussions from the National Election Commission.
Why it matters
The case could nullify Yoon's 2022 election win and affect the ruling party's legitimacy.
