Specialized travel insurance options expand beyond traditional coverage
A range of niche travel insurance products, from breakup protection to weather guarantees, are gaining attention as travelers seek more tailored coverage.
Data indicate that a sizable portion of American travelers skip insurance, contrasting with higher adoption rates abroad. In response, firms are launching targeted products that go beyond standard trip cancellation. Annie Sloan's Host Co. partnered with insurer Faye to sell a breakup-cancellation plan that lets customers cancel up to 24 hours before departure for a fee of about $100 for $1,000 coverage.
JetBlue teamed with WeatherPromise to bundle a weather-guarantee for Jamaica trips, promising a $500 payout when rain exceeds set thresholds, which the airline says boosted bookings. World Nomads offers similar weather-disruption coverage, while Hotspot Cover provides policies for travel to conflict zones and remote destinations. Medjet markets high-end medical evacuation without typical exclusions, and SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance delivers comprehensive medical and income protection for digital nomads at a monthly cost starting around $443. Together, these products illustrate a shift toward more personalized travel risk management.
