Speedboat hits Greek coast guard near Lesvos, six migrants dead
Early Monday morning a migrant speedboat departing from Turkey struck the left side of a Greek coast guard vessel about 3.5 nautical miles south of Agrilia, causing the boat to overturn. Six migrants – four men, one woman and an infant – were found dead and eight others were rescued and taken to Mytilene for hospital treatment. Among the rescued was a 37‑year‑old Turkish national who was arrested as a suspected smuggler and boat operator. Greek shipping minister Vassilis Kikilias reiterated that evidence suggests the speedboat hit the coast guard ship with its bow and emphasized Greece’s uncompromising stance toward human‑smuggling networks.
