Spike in driver-side airbag thefts targets Honda models across several states

Law enforcement agencies have issued an alert about a recent increase in driver-side airbag thefts affecting Honda Accords, Civics, HR-Vs and CR-Vs. The incidents have been reported in Maryland, Illinois and South Florida, with thieves typically operating overnight and then selling the stolen airbags on the black market at prices far below the roughly $1,000 cost of a new dealer-installed unit. Officials recommend that owners park in illuminated locations, keep their vehicles locked, and, if possible, position outdoor security cameras to face the car.

According to one outlet Insurance Crime Bureau, more than 500,000 airbags are stolen each year, generating about $50 million in losses for insurers and owners. The warning underscores the financial impact on drivers and the broader issue of automotive parts trafficking.
