SPÖ leadership reshuffle hinges on Finance Minister Marterbauer's recovery

The Austrian Social Democratic Party agreed on a restructuring plan that depends on Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer recovering from cancer to assume the vice-chancellor post and party chair.

The SPÖ resolved a turbulent leadership crisis by outlining a phased handover that ties the party’s future to Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer’s health. Andreas Babler will remain party leader and vice-chancellor through year-end, after which Marterbauer is slated to take over both roles once his cancer treatment finishes, with a tentative handover date of early 2027. Interim management will be handled by Eva-Maria Holzleitner and Philip Kucher, who are also tasked with smoothing relations between the federal party and the states.

The plan anticipates the return of all nine state party chairs, including former rivals Hans Peter Doskozil and Sven Hergovich, by the 2027 party congress, effectively ending a two-decade internal feud. Some factions demand a direct election of the new chair, citing party statutes, while others argue one outlet compromise should not be publicly challenged. The broader coalition government hopes the internal turmoil will not spill over into its policy agenda.

Why it matters

The SPÖ’s leadership outcome will shape Austria’s coalition dynamics and influence upcoming elections.
