Spontaneous protest gathers in Valencia's City Hall Square, hints at a tent encampment
An unannounced gathering assembled in Valencia's Plaza del Ayuntamiento this afternoon, discussing whether to set up a tent camp similar to Madrid's Puerta del Sol.
After a housing demonstration on Saturday resulted in five arrests and injuries to nine national police officers, an impromptu assembly formed in Valencia's Plaza del Ayuntamiento later in the day. The crowd, which was not pre-registered, gathered to discuss replicating the tent encampment seen at Madrid's Puerta del Sol, and a few attendees had already set up tents on the plaza in front of the city hall. The Sindicat de Llogateres de Valencia, one of the groups that called the original protest, was no longer present at the square. In response to the growing number of participants, authorities closed the surrounding streets to traffic and began a police presence on the scene.
Why it matters
The protest reflects ongoing housing tensions in Spain and the potential spread of tent encampments as a form of civil dissent.
